spring recommendations // seasonal reads

Spring has sprung, er, the cows have come? Somehow I don't think that's the rhyme, but moving on...

We are well and truly in the midst of spring here in Australia - the magpies are swooping and the jacarandas are in full bloom. A perfect combination. It has also been raining here in Brisbane for almost two weeks straight, but we won't talk about that.

To celebrate spring, I thought I would share with you three recently* released #LoveOzYA books that I think would make the perfect seasonal reads! (And that I really should read.)

*Look, they're all 2018 releases, okay? That's recent enough for me.

An emotionally charged story of music, abuse and, ultimately, hope.

Beck hates his life. He hates his violent mother. He hates his home. Most of all, he hates the piano that his mother forces him to play hour after hour, day after day. He will never play as she did before illness ended her career and left her bitter and broken. But Beck is too scared to stand up to his mother, and tell her his true passion, which is composing his own music - because the least suggestion of rebellion on his part ends in violence.

When Beck meets August, a girl full of life, energy and laughter, love begins to awaken within him and he glimpses a way to escape his painful existence. But dare he reach for it?

It has a butterfly on the cover! Butterflies SCREAM spring! Fun fact: this book was written by Cait @ Paper Fury and she has all but assured everyone that it will leave you an emotional ruin. So we'll just ignore the fact that I am 100% sure it will tear me to pieces.

The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde

Published May 2018
A teen rockstar has to navigate family, love, coming out, and life in the spotlight after being labeled the latest celebrity trainwreck in Jen Wilde's quirky and utterly relatable novel.

As a rock star drummer in the hit band The Brightsiders, Emmy King’s life should be perfect. But there’s nothing the paparazzi love more than watching a celebrity crash and burn. When a night of partying lands Emmy in hospital and her girlfriend in jail, she’s branded the latest tabloid train wreck.

Luckily, Emmy has her friends and bandmates, including the super-swoonworthy Alfie, to help her pick up the pieces of her life. She knows hooking up with a band member is exactly the kind of trouble she should be avoiding, and yet Emmy and Alfie Just. Keep. Kissing.

Will the inevitable fallout turn her into a clickbait scandal (again)? Or will she find the strength to stand on her own?

Look at those colours! They match the shade of jacaranda blossoms perfectly! And, um, yes. That is my entire justification for including this book in this list. So sue me.

Actually, please don't. That would be awful and I have no money.

Tin Heart by Shivaun Plozza

Published February 2018
When Marlowe gets a heart transplant and a second chance at life, all she wants is to thank her donor’s family. Maybe then she can move on. Maybe then she’ll discover who she is if she’s no longer ‘The Dying Girl’.

But with a little brother who dresses like every day is Halloween, a vegan warrior for a mother and an all-out war with the hot butcher’s apprentice next door, Marlowe’s life is already pretty complicated. And her second chance is about to take an unexpected turn…

Again, the colours on the cover are absolutely GORGEOUS. But I promise this time I have a legitimate reason for including Tin Heart in this list: spring is traditionally associated with the ideas of rebirth and resurrection and these are also major themes of this novel. Sounds like a perfect match to me!
