unachievable summer TBR // Top Ten Tuesday

I swear no matter how many books I read, my TBR pile never shrinks. It just continues to grow and grow until it becomes multiple piles and, oh no, now it's a sea of books and I can't see the floor anymore.

But that's not what this post is about. Not really. Although my TBR "pile" does somewhat resemble a small ocean, today I am discussing just ten (well, eleven) books that I'm hoping to read this summer.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I tend to gravitate towards contemporaries in the summer months, however, I've since realised that I have A LOT of fantasies to catch up on. So it looks like some of those contemporaries may have to take a backseat.

Nevertheless, I'm excited to read each and every one of the following books so if that's any indication, then it's going to be a great summer!

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl, with a new topic to respond to every week.

1. Beautiful Broken Things by Sarah Barnard

Beautiful Broken Things has been on my radar since it was announced as one of Zoella's book club picks in 2016. I haven't had a chance to read it yet but I'm hoping to pick it up sometime over the next few months in preparation for the release of the upcoming companion novel, Fierce Fragile Hearts!

2. The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

I always enjoy Sarah Dessen's books so when I saw this one at a secondhand shop (in the old cover style like the ones I already owned!) I just had to pick it up. Now I need to read it.

3. When We Collided by Emery Lord

When We Collided was a bargain-buy from a book outlet store a year or so ago, and although I haven't read an Emery Lord novel before, the synopsis sounded intriguing. As a contemporary, if I don't read it this summer, it'll most likely end up sitting on my shelves for another whole year!

4. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

If you're a regular visitor to my blog, no doubt you'll have noticed Children of Blood and Bone on multiple of my TBRs over the past few months. I actually started reading it in August and got halfway through but wasn't feeling it so put it down. As one of the hottest YA novels of the year and being someone who dislikes DNFing books, I really feel like I ought to give it a second chance!

I LOVED The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue and the sequel novella The Gentleman's Guide to Getting Lucky so I was ecstatic to receive Lady's Guide in The YA Chronicles October box. This is one I want to read ASAP!

6. Whisper of the Tide by Sarah Tolcser

As I mentioned last week in my list of Series I Need To Finish, I've been trying super hard to keep up to date with sequels this year. So I'd really like to continue this streak and finish the Song of the Current duology over the summer!

7. Undying by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Again, it would be great if I could cross this series off the list as well!

8. Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Real talk: The Hunger Games is probably my favourite trilogy of all time. It's well-written and fast-paced and equal parts thrilling and heart-breaking. I reread the first book a few months ago so it's high time to reread these two as well!

9. Reign the Earth by A. C. Gaughen

Reign the Earth is a diverse fantasy that I feel hasn't received the hype it probably deserves. With the sequel, Imprison the Sky, set for publication in January, I'd really like to get to this one soon!

10. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

An absolute classic of the fantasy genre (yet one that I have yet to read), The Name of the Wind is the February pick for the book club that I participate in. In fact, it's actually the inspiration behind The Name of the Book's name!

So, um, this list is actually wildly unachievable. But who doesn't love setting themselves lofty goals that are completely unattainable and then being absolutely devastated when things don't go as planned?

No? Just me?

Have you read any of the books on my summer TBR? Would you recommend them? What books are on your TBR this season? Let me know in the comments below and leave a link to your TTT so I can pop on over for a visit and check it out!

  1. Hope you enjoy all of these, Niamh!! I read THG and "Mockingjay," but never "Catching Fire." Also, someday I still need to read one of Sarah Dessen's novels. I've never tried one of her books despite the fact that they sound like my kind of reads. Happy summer TBR-ing. :)

    1. Thanks, Rissi! Interesting that you've not read Catching Fire – were you not at all confused reading Mockingjay? I've enjoyed every single Sarah Dessen novel I've read so far, so much so that she has become an auto-buy author for me! So I would definitely recommend her books!

  2. I feel the same Niamh. My TBR is always growing. I hope that you enjoy these books this Winter. My TTT

  3. Summer and reading go pretty well together, so I hope you get to lots of these! I just read The Hunger Games books for the first time in the last year, and loved them, so I totally get wanting to re- read them! And Reign the Earth has such a beautiful cover. I want to try that one too.

    Happy reading!

    1. Me too! Oh I'm really happy to hear that you loved The Hunger Games! It does, doesn't it?! I'm not quite sure how I feel about the cover of Imprision the Sky though...

    2. I'm kind of the same- the cover for Sky just doesn't have that oomph or something that Reign the Earth had. That cover was special. :)

  4. Beautiful Broken Things is on my TBR as well. I've no clue where it is though.. [That's the disadvantage of moving. All my books are in boxes and.. it's HORRIBLE.]

I absolutely loved Children of Blood and Bone! I hope you end up enjoying it as well. Maybe you simply weren't in the right head space for it the first time around. :) Or at least, I hope so because that means you might end up loving it as well, haha.

The Ladies Guide to Petticoats and Piracy AND The Name of the Wind are both on my TBR as well. I'm pretty sure the first one is sitting in my small case [that hasn't been packed yet] since it released fairly recently. The latter is.. somewheeeeere. Probably won't be reading that one any time soon since people have been waiting for the third installment how long now? :/

Anyway! I'd say you've made a decent mix of contemporary vs. fantasy - fingers crossed you manage to tick off most of these during summer!

    1. Oh no! I am really not looking forward to when I have to move... all the boxes! *shudders*

I really hope that's the case! CoBaB has such a good premise and it's just the kind of book I usually love so I'll be super disappointed if I don't like it.

Yes, TNotW is definitely one of those slow-burn series (in regards to publication times) but surely the third book is due for release soon, right...? Right???

Thank you! I have a good feeling that it'll be a productive few months!

(Also I can't reply to your comment on your blog post but I am SO HAPPY that you're loving Nevernight and I'm reconsidering my offer to trade weather given your work's dodgy heating, sorry.)

    2. At least you'll.. have some mental preparation time? I swear that's very much needed. You only realize how many books you have once you have to pack them and then MOVE them. And unpack them.. I don't know whether it'll be frustrating tears or happy ones when I finally get to that next step, haha.

Fingers crossed for you liking CoBaB AND the third book of TNotW being released soon! Ish? I don't even want to know how long people have been waiting for that one to be honest..

(That's so weird! Any idea why you can't reply? Now I'm wondering if anyone else ever has that problem on my blog.. That would be a shame! - Also I stole some soup from the kitchen at work so that's been my way to warm up today, haha. Pretty sure I won't want any soup for the rest of the week now but whatever.)

      Delete
    3. Yes, mental preparation will definitely be key. It must be so devastating having to take all your books off the shelves and put them in boxes! I hope you're able to unpack yours soon and that it's not too frustrating a process!!

Fingers crossed that ALL the books will be released soon-ish!

(I have no idea! I can reply to my own comment but not yours? The option just isn't there, sadly. Soup is GREAT! I'm glad you had something to warm you up!)

    1. Haha well if I go in with low expectations of myself then I don't feel *quite* as bad when I fail miserably! I love rereading so much! I used to not own a huge amount of books so I'd reread them all the time. Some books I've read seven or eight times, easily!

  6. Ahhh yay someone who did this prompt for summer *hi five* 😂I really liked the Lady's Guide (although probably liked Monty's more tbh) so I hope you enjoy it! And The Name of the Wind is VERY big but VERY good. And omg I want to reread The Hunger Games someday! I read it so long ago, I don't even have reviews up. Like pre-blogging days, gasp, the prehistoric times!😂 Good luck with the TBR! (And yes definitely set myself unattainable goals and then feel bad for not meeting them aghosghso oops.)

    1. Yesss southern hemisphere represent! Haha thanks! I'm so keen to read both Lady's Guide and TNotW (even though its size is SUPER intimidating)! This is the first time I've read THG since first reading it when the series blew up but it's just as great as I remember so I hope you get to reread it again soon! Thanks for visiting!

  9. I've read The Hunger Games series in both English and Spanish. I read Children of Blood and Bone, but although I know it was a well-written book with a great setting, great plot, and wonderful characters, it wasn't the right book for me at the time I read it.

    1. Wow, that's so great that you're able to read books in multiple languages! I've tried reading a few books in German (which I learnt in school) but it is so time consuming. Hmm it's interesting that you also weren't enamoured with CoBaB. Do you think you'll give it a second chance?

  11. Children of Blood and Bone has been on my TBR since its release day. I don`t know if I`m scared it won`t live up to the hype or what, but I never seem to pick it up. Good luck with your reading!

    1. It also took me a while to pick it up the first time around even though I was so excited for it at the start of the year. I definitely get scared that such hyped books won't live to expectations but I'm such a mood reader that I think I mainly just lose interest. Thank you! I hope that when you do pick CoBaB up that you enjoy it!

  12. I bought The Name of the Wind when it was on ebook special. I have been meaning to read a Rothfuss for the last couple of years. I don't know when I'll get to it though. 📚
